Lichen Portal began in the woods near Roslyn, Washington. Lashing together found sticks with twine, I formed the circle that anchors the piece and collected lichen with which to wrap it. Over the course of two months, I used the foraged lichen to completely envelop the stick circle, carefully matting it to itself without the use of additional adhesives and creating the portal. Once on site in Naches, WA for The Lodge, I suspended the portal between two trees, surrounding it with garden mesh and sewing additional lichen onto the mesh using fishing line.
Throughout the course of the event, attendees were invited to travel through the portal freely, using it to pass between realities, identities, states of mind. A lighting installation nearby by the artist Gardenia accentuated the texture of the piece and added to its’ presence.
